In the summer of 2008, IAMFT achieved its latest legislative success with the passage of HB953, our vendorship initiative.

This legislation stipulates that if an insurance company chartered in the State of Illinois offers mental health coverage, it has to include Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists on its list of providers for mental health services.

This culminated a five year process that had been met with much resistance.  In 2008, thanks to the leadership of our lobbyist, Gary McCants, and the active leadership shown by its Board of Directors, HB953 passed through both the House and the Senate with healthy margins of victory.  This accomplishment, however, was almost undone with an amendatory veto by then-governor, Rod Blagojevich.  With a swift response from its board and active lobbying from its membership, IAMFT was able to achieve a veto override in August of 2008, passing HB953 into law.

Since this passage, the law became Public Act 095-0972 and was put in action in January of 2009.

If you are having any difficulty in receiving coverage, we encourage you to click on the link below for a full description of the law which can be sent to the insurance company that is not responding appropriately.

  • AAMFT Bylaws Vote

This summer, AAMFT is proposing a change to their bylaws that would end the current "two-tier dues structure", thus ending state divisions.  This change was proposed by the AAMFT Board of Directors in 2015, but did not receive the two-thirds vote necessary to make the change.  For more information on how this vote affects you, please CLICK HERE.
